Crown Lengthening

Crown lengthening is a dental procedure that removes gum tissue or bone to expose more tooth structure to fix a filling, to place a crown, or to correct gingival health. This procedure is commonly recommended for tooth that has severe decay or fracture below the gum line. Occasionally, crown lengthening can be use to remove excess gum tissue in patient with gummy smile or excessive growth of gum tissue due to either fixed orthodontic gingivitis or steroid (cyclosporine)induced gingival hyperplasia.

 

Crown Lengthening

 

Procedure:

  • Local anesthetic is given.
  • An incision is made around the tooth being treated.
  • Appropriate amount of gum or bone is removed.
  • Suture is place and Post op instructions are given.
  • An antibiotic and an antimicrobial rinse are prescribed.
  • The suture is removed in 10 days to avoid infection or inflammation.
